Social workers are part of an important support system in this increasingly fast-paced and often stressful world. They may work within particular segments of social work services including domestic violence, child protection or drug and alcohol rehabilitation. The three core values of social work are: respect for persons, social justice and personal integrity. People who are empathetic, caring and passionate about affecting social change could be well suited to this career. In dealing with people during challenging times, a good deal of inner strength and professionalism is required.
Social work can be undertaken in community organisations, private businesses or with the government. Depending on your field, you may work with individual clients or groups, and with youths or people of all ages. Conversely, social work can also be practiced through research, writing policy, coordinating programs or teaching at institutions. This career path offers many different opportunities, and may be done in person or remotely with the widespread use of technology.
