What is ELICOS?

Studying English in Australia is easy, and thus attracts thousands of students year after year. English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) are designed for those who want to gain better English language skills.

Just as one would apply for a student visa, ELICOS students do the same. An important difference is that the English language requirements will be waived if you are registered for an ELICOS course. Taking an ELICOS course that yields an official result (i.e. IELTS) can then be used to apply for other courses that have an English language requirement. As such, upon completion of an ELICOS course, students may transition directly to another course in another subject area. If you know this path is of interest, then you may want to course package in order to remain in Australia on one student visa.

One of the best things about studying English in Australia is that so many students from other countries will be doing the same. It is not so intimidating to learn a new language when others are too.

Living in an English-speaking country will offer countless opportunities to listen to, and practice the language. Many ELICOS institutions offer onsite accommodation or are partnered with homestays. Check out our article about accommodation options or read more about the accommodation providers we have partnered with.

Tourists in Australia wanting to study English – or another subject – may do so for up to 12 weeks on a tourist visa. If studying for more than 12 weeks, a student visa is required. Coming into the country on a tourist visa can be a great option for people who aren’t sure about making the commitment to a student visa; you are able to briefly test the experience of studying in Australia. You can then apply from onshore to transition to a student visa. However, if you know you want to be here for a longer time and want to make sure you have the proper visa to stay in Australia, we recommend applying in advance for a student visa.
